Why is it important to test cookware?

Cookware products are becoming an important element of our daily lives.  Aside from concerns such as hazardous substances being released during use, the quality of materials used is just as important.  The durability, functionality, and longevity of cookware significantly depend on this.

How is domestic cookware regulated in the EU?

EN 12983 was updated in February 2023 and introduced significant changes to the construction and performance requirements for household goods:

  • Part 1 specifies the safety and performance requirements for items of cookware for domestic use on top of a stove, cooker or hob. It applies to all cookware regardless of the material or method of manufacture. It also applies to cookware intended for use both “on top” and “in oven”.
  • Part 2 specifies the safety and performance requirements for domestic ceramic and glass ceramic cookware for use on top of a stove, cooker or hob.

These documents supersede EN 12983-1: 2000 with amendment/corrigendum and CEN/TS 12983-2: 2005 respectively.
