The ISO 14001:2026 Environmental Management System (EMS) standard was officially released on 15 April 2026.
As one of the most widely adopted environmental management standards globally, this update marks a significant revision, bringing new opportunities and direction for organizations to enhance environmental management and support sustainable development:

- How can organizations ensure a seamless transition?
- What are the latest certification arrangements?
To support your organization’s transition, we have compiled the key highlights to help you quickly understand the latest changes and implementation approach of ISO 14001:2026.
KEY CHANGES IN ISO 14001:2026
Compared with the 2015 edition, the updated standard continues to adopt the Harmonized Structure (formerly Annex SL), while further enhancing requirements related to organizational accountability, governance and sustainability.
- New clause 6.3 – Planning of changes
- Introduces clearer requirements for the systematic planning and control of changes
- Ensures environmental impacts arising from operational changes are effectively identified, assessed, and managed
- Stronger integration of environmental and sustainability considerations
- Provides more explicit guidance on environmental factors within the organizational context (Clause 4.1)
- Further clarifies requirements related to interested parties’ needs, expectations, and compliance obligations (Clause 4.2)
- In addition, the scope of environmental responsibility is expanded to cover:
- Climate change
- Ecosystem and biodiversity
- Investors and customer expectations related to sustainability / ESG
- Enhanced lifecycle perspective
- Emphasizes the assessment of environmental impacts across the full lifecycle of products and services
- Extends responsibility beyond internal operations to encompass the entire supply chain and value chain
- Key transformation:
- Shifts from a reactive, compliance-based approach to a more strategic, proactive, and prevention-driven model
- Promotes the development of an environmental management system that spans the entire value chain, strengthening long-term sustainable competitiveness
ISO 14001:2026 TRANSITION REQUIREMENTS AND TIMELINE
According to transition guidance issued by Global Accreditation Cooperation Initiative (ACI), the key requirements are as follows:
- Organizations currently certified to the 2015 version are required to undergo a transition audit to achieve certification to ISO 14001:2026, ensuring continued demonstration of their environmental management capability and performance
- A three-year transition period has been established (15 April 2026 – 30 April 2029), during which organizations should complete their transition audits
- Upon the transition deadline, all ISO 14001:2015 certificates will expire and no longer remain valid
- 18 months after the publication of the new standard (i.e. after October 2027), certification bodies will cease accepting new certification applications based on the 2015 version; however, ongoing surveillance and recertification audits will generally remain unaffected
