Pet Toy Test Service (US Market)
Based on relevant standards such as ASTM F-963, our testing services will cover safety aspects such as mechanical and physical properties, flammability, chemical composition, and specific hazards, helping brands and manufacturers ensure the safety of your pet toys.
Why is it important to test pet toys?
Pet owners often view their pets as members of the family and want to be assured of the safety and quality of their pet’s products. While there are very few formal regulations addressing pet toy safety, pet lovers worldwide are doing more and more to demand standards and accountability for retailers and manufacturers of pet toys. Chewing, choking, and toxicity are the main risks, and consumers want to know that the pet toys they buy are strong enough and safe enough for their pets.
How is pet toy safety regulated?
There are virtually no federal or state laws in the US pertaining to pet products. Although they are defined as consumer goods, the US Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has made it clear it does not have the resources to regulate pet products unless a person is injured. However, children’s products, especially in relation to phthalates and lead levels, are regulated under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008. This act does not specifically mention pet toys but, since toys for pets are often used by children, it may be advisable for manufacturers to comply with these requirements.
What SGS can help?
The key to protection is ensuring products are safe, high-quality, and conform to relevant standards. Depending on the product, testing could be for chemicals, function, physical safety, flammability, strength and durability, stability and/or dynamic and static loading.
