Q1. How can auditee know which audit type shall be applied?

The audit type shall be determined by end buyer. Auditee and/or applicant shall confirm with end buyer before making decision. quote or reply within 1 working day.


Q2. Does the SMETA report have to be uploaded to Sedex?

Yes. as in accordance to Sedex’s requirement.


Q3. After uploading the SMETA report to Sedex, who can review the report? And how shall the auditee share the report with customers?

After audit firm uploading the SMETA report to Sedex, only auditee and audit firm can review the report. If auditee would like to make it visible to any other parties, first they need to publish the report in Sedex. After that, the report will be visible to authorized customer. If auditee is not aware of how to authorize a report to a customer, they can contact Sedex helpdesk for further assistant. But for non-Sedex member, they are unable to login Sedex or share report. The report can only be shared in PDF format through email to customers for non-Sedex member.

Q4. Will there be a certificate issued after completion of SMETA audit? And how to evaluate if the audit is pass or fail?

There will be no certification for SMETA audits. The delivery of the audit is only the summary report and CAPR (corrective action plan report). There is no conclusion like scoring, grading or fail or pass judgement. The evaluation of the audit result is solely based on the judgement of customers. And different customers may have different conclusions for the same report.


Q5. What is the valid period of a SMETA report? And when the next audit will be arranged?

There is no validity for a SMETA report. But different end buyer will have different requirement. Auditee shall confirm with the end buyer of the next audit time.


Q6. Is it mandatory to conduct follow-up audit, and does the factory have to close all NC findings in the report?

There is no specific requirement from audit firms or Sedex. Auditee shall confirm with the end buyer of the follow-up audit arrangement as well as close of NC findings in the report.

Q8. Can trading companies or logistic companies apply for SMETA audit?

Yes, companies from all different kinds of industries can apply for SMETA audits.


Q9. We’re a new company registered less than 3 months ago. Can we still apply for the SMETA audit?

For new factories, there shall be wage and attendance records for at least 3 full months for verification, regardless of the registration time.


Q10. Comparing with BSCI and SMETA, which is easier to pass and which is more widely accepted?

Both BSCI and SMETA do not have a fail or pass conclusion. The evaluation of the audit result is solely based on the judgement of customers. And different customers may have different conclusions for the same report. Both 2 audit schemes are widely accepted by customers.
