Microfiber Testing
We providesspecialized microfiber testing services to combat textile pollution. Since 2016, we’ve developed robust methods to assess fiber release in garments, approved by The Microfiber Consortium, enabling faster access to performance data for sustainable practices in the industry.
Why should we tackle microfiber pollution in textiles?
The issue of microfiber pollution from the textile industry has remained to be popular topic nowadays. Many studies have shown that microfibers can be found in oceans, rivers, and lakes which are related to the fiber released from garment products. It is far from reaching a solution, and the main reason for the slow progression is the lack of understanding of the issue. While lacking a reliable means to assess the microfiber releasing properties of garments and raw material fabric, the textile supply chain cannot tackle the problem efficiently.
What SGS can help?
SGS has researched microfiber testing since 2016, aiming to develop robust, reproducible methods for assessing fiber release. In 2017, we launched full-scale testing for garments, widely adopted by clients. We also participate in small-scale method developments, recognizing their value for microfiber research. In April 2020, The Microfiber Consortium approved our laboratories for TMC member testing.
SGS is now approved to conduct small-scale microfiber testing using the TMC test method. This service evaluates fiber release performance, helping to understand the impact of fabric structures and treatments. With accelerated washing procedures, we provide quicker access to performance data. TMC members can rely on SGS for reliable testing services.
