PFAS Series | Concerns in Clothing Product: What are PFAS?

2024.09.01

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a diverse group of synthetic chemicals widely used for their exceptional water, oil, grease, and dirt-repellent properties. Commonly found in various applications, PFAS are particularly prevalent in the treatment of fabrics and textiles, enhancing their durability and performance.

Why Are PFAS Being Banned?

The increasing awareness of PFAS's environmental and health impacts has triggered a wave of restrictions. These substances are persistent, meaning they do not break down in the environment or the human body. As they bioaccumulate over time, they can lead to heightened toxicity levels. Consequently, many countries and regions have introduced bans or restrictions on their use.

How Are PFAS Regulated Worldwide?

PFAS regulations vary significantly across the globe. In regions such as the European Union and the United States, strict limitations have been imposed. For instance:

  • California AB 652 and AB 1200: These laws prohibit PFAS containing at least one fully fluorinated carbon atom.
  • EU Regulation 2021/1297: This restricts linear and branched perfluorocarboxylic acids containing 9 to 14 carbon atoms (C9-C14 PFCA), along with their salts and related substances under the EU REACH framework.

Various industrial organizations, including the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Foundation, bluesign® and Apparel and Footwear International also play a crucial role in regulating PFAS use.

Are PFAS a Concern in Clothing?

Recent studies from North America have detected harmful chemical levels, including PFAS, in clothing that exceed regulatory thresholds. This raises significant concerns about the safety of these products, especially given the potential health risks associated with PFAS exposure.

How Does SGS Support the Textile Industry in Eliminating PFAS?

SGS, a global leader in inspection, verification, testing, and certification, offers a comprehensive PFAS Test Program. This program serves as a one-stop solution to meet EU, US, and other market requirements regarding PFAS. Key features include:

  • Total Fluorine Screening: This service is especially relevant in the US market, where the list of restricted substances is not well defined. The method quickly checks for non-intentionally added substances.

While PFAS have provided benefits in the textile industry, their environmental and health impacts cannot be overlooked. The shift towards safer alternatives is essential for protecting both consumers and the environment.
