Service Scope
General footwear includes the leather shoes, textile shoes and plastics shoes for people to use in daily life.
SGS provides basic chemical and physical performance test suggestions for different general footwear styles. The package helps to make sure your sample could attain the basic quality expectation on the market – the first step to customer trust and brand building.
This page specifies test item for footwear made with leather, synthetic leather, textile and plastics shoes.
Product Type
- Material type: Leather / Synthetic Leather / Textile / Plastic
Choose the material type according to the main upper of the sample shoes.
- With Closure / Without Closure
If your sample shoe has zipper, lace, buckles, velcro, please choose corresponding product material type option “with Closure” to cover the necessary strength or chemical test on those additional part.
- High heel Ankles/Boots
Heel tests will be added for High Heel options. For more high-heel types, you may want to visit our High Heels Test Package or contact us.

Test Description
Basic Physical Test
Our physical test package presents the most important physical tests that may affect compliance.
Test items (for reference only):
- Material identification & Pictogram check
- Small part safety test for children shoes
- Whole shoe flammability for US children shoes
- Physical safety assessment for children
The test items will be adjusted depending on your product type and age range
Basic Physical & Quality Test
Our physical & quality test package is an advanced version of basic physical package, consolidating the most common physical performance tests applying to footwear products.
Test items (for reference only):
- Tests in “Basic Physical Test”
- Whole shoe flexing
- Sole Durability test
- Colorfastness Test
- Component Adhesion Strength Test
- Closure Strength Test if with closure
- Corrosion resistance for metal part
The test items will be adjusted depending on your product type and age range.
Basic Chemical Test (#composite test)
Our chemical test package includes the basic hazardous chemicals based on material type and market recall risks.
Test items (for reference only):
- Total Heavy Metals
- Phthalates
- Formaldehyde
- Azo dye
- pH value
- Nickel release for prolonged skin contact metals
- Chromium VI (for real leather shoe only) / PAH (for synthetic leather shoe & sole only)
EU: Due to the wide range of regulations, not all EU regulatory chemical tests are included, but selected based on recall risk only.
US: Only US federal tests are included. State laws are excluded.
Remarks
The test items will be adjusted depending on your product type and age range. Only specific test items will be applied to selected product type, test type and destination market. Detailed test item list will be included in order confirmation email upon purchase.
If your product is composed of white color or indigo dye (which is common for denim), you may want to consider additional Colorfastness Tests for White Color/Indigo Dye. Dye for these color types are especially vulnerable to certain warehouse condition.
# To save your test budget, composite test is quoted for chemical testing. Similar materials on sample will be gathered for analysis. In case any restricted chemical is detected in composite testing, additional individual checking may be required. Applicant will be informed in that case.
