Service Scope
Jackets provide not only an additional layer of cloth on your dress-up routine. It also represents the customer’s fashion stance and allows additional warmth or weather protection. With that said, weakly constructed fabric or seams that breaks when wearing, faded colors after one time of outdoor activity or two, or leakage of rainwater of a raincoat… would definitely destroy the customer’s faith in the fashion label.
SGS provides basic chemical and physical performance test suggestions for coats & jackets, such as zipped hoodies, trench coats, and down or leather jackets, to ensure your product performance and eliminate risks of customer complaints. If you are looking for basic quality assurance testing, here is a good start.

Product Type
- Casual Jacket
Including the most common testing applicable for most jackets.
Applicable examples: zipped hoodies, blouson, fleece jacket, denim jacket.If there are additional function claims like “breathable”/ “UV protection”, please consider Comfort Test Package and Protection Test Package, or contact us for assistance.
- Feather & Down Jacket
Including regulatory compliance test (e.g. cleanliness of feather and down) for stuffing material, and filling penetration to cloth.
Applicable examples: down coat, feather stuffed ski jacket.If there are additional function claims like “keep warmth at certain temperature”, please contact us for assistance.
- Leather Jacket
Including test items specific to leather material, and tarnishing test for metal parts.
Applicable examples: leather bikers, leather aviator and bomber jacket.
- Raincoat
Including test that evaluates waterproof performance.
Applicable examples: plastic raincoat, trench coat.

Basic Physical Test
Our physical test package presents the most important physical tests that may affect compliance.

Basic Physical & Quality Test
Our physical & quality test package is an advanced version of basic physical package, consolidating the most common physical performance tests applying to clothing products.

- Washing Test

Basic Chemical Test (#composite test)
Our chemical test package includes the basic hazardous chemicals based on material type and market recall risks.
Test items (for reference only):
- Total Heavy Metals
- Phthalates
- Chromium VI, for leather jacket
- Formaldehyde
- Azo dye
- pH value
- Nickel release on prolonged skin-contact metal
The test items will be adjusted depending on the marketplace and actual sample.
EU: Due to the wide range of regulations, not all EU regulatory chemical tests are included, but selected based on recall risk only.
US: Only US federal test are included. State laws are excluded.
Remarks
The test items will be adjusted depending on your product type and age range. Only specific test items will be applied to the selected product type, test type and destination market. Detailed test item list will be included in order confirmation email upon purchase.
* There is no harmonized flammability test method that applies to general apparel for the EU market. The result may be shown as data only without pass/fail. Some specific European countries (Sweden / Norway / Netherlands / Switzerland) may have specific flammability standards. If you expect your product to go into these countries, please contact us instead.
Physical test packages do not include any comment on care labeling. If you are looking for a care instruction development, please consider “Care Label Recommendation” in Washing Tests.
If your garment is composed of white color or indigo dye (which is common for denim), you may want to consider additional Colorfastness Tests for White Color/Indigo Dye. Dye for these color types is especially vulnerable to certain warehouse conditions.
# To save your test budget, the composite test is quoted for chemical testing. Similar materials on the sample will be gathered for analysis. In case any restricted chemical is detected in composite testing, additional individual checking may be required. Applicant will be informed in that case.
